Dreams of a long playoff run ended on Wednesday with a 1-0 loss to Cal Baptist. It was a tough and even game until a penalty call in the 84th minute resulted in a Lancer score. A sincere thank you to all the alumni, parents, and students who have supported our team this year through thick and thin. We would have never made it this far without your encouragement and counsel.

Article from Sports Information Director Ron Smith:

A Hard End to a Hard Year
Submitted by: Ron Smith - November 3rd, 2010

“It was a hard end to a hard year,” said Westmont Men’s Soccer head coach Dave Wolf in response to a controversial ending to the Warriors’ first round Golden State Athletic Conference playoff loss to #11 California Baptist. For the Lancers (15-3) it was the first men’s soccer playoff win in school history.

With 6:19 remaining in regulation of a scoreless game, the Lancers were awarded a penalty kick when Tiburcio Casillas was fouled in the box by Peter Schmetz. Heitor Santarem took the penalty kick and aimed for the right-hand corner. Westmont keeper Matt McNab guessed the opposite direction and the Lancers went up 1-0.

The Warriors (8-5-5) thought they would receive a penalty kick with 2:30 remaining as a result of what appeared to be a hand ball in the box. But the center referee made no call despite the passionate urging of the Warrior bench.

“How do you say what you really want to say about a penalty kick given in the eighty-fifth minute of a playoff game because of a foul that CBU wasn’t responding to very vehemently?” asked Wolf. “And then what appears to be, from my perspective, a handball in the box that wasn’t called. The ball dropped straight down to the ground. If it comes off the chest the way the linesman explained it to me, it doesn’t drop down the way that it did.”

The game itself had been hard-fought by both teams. Each team had five shots on goal (excluding the penalty kick) and both had significant chances to score. Two of those changes came in the first half for the Warriors.

Doug Harrell got off the Warriors’ first shot on goal in the seventeenth minute, but it was saved by Lancer keeper Joey Pacheco. In the twenty-eighth minute, Nana Akyen took a free kick from twenty-two yards out, but the ball sailed over the goal. In the thirty-ninth minute, Harrison Hill passed the ball from the right side to Akyen who was charging down the middle of the field. Akyen fired from 25 yards but right at Pacheco.

In the eight-second minute, Isaac Thompkins was positioned at the far post and headed a cross toward the net. Unfortunately Pacheco was also positioned at the far post and snatched the ball from the air.

“I asked the team before the game to be men today,” said Wolf. “I wanted 20 men to go out on the field with, and I thought they were that today. From that vantage point, I couldn’t ask any more than I got today out of them. I thought they fought valiantly today.”

For four of the Warriors, the game marks the last time they will take the field for the Warriors – Dan Sargent, Scott Williams, Tony Niboli and Harrison Hill.

“The seniors gave everything they had to give,” said Wolf. “I look especially at Dan Sargent who had an incredible year. Harry had maybe his best game of the season. If you are going to go out, you want to go out playing as good as you can play, and I felt like our seniors did that. It won’t matter to them much right now, but it will as a little time passes.”

California Baptist advances to the semifinals on Saturday where they will take on #16 Azusa Pacific. The Cougars advanced by virtue of a 4-0 win over Hope International.

It definitely wasn't the prettiest game but the Warriors nonetheless were able to secure a huge win over Master's College. Doug Harrell (Junior, Forward) scored in the first five minutes from a long cross from Gustavo Hernandez (Freshman, Defender). From there, it was a game characterized by competing in the air and maintaining discipline in the defensive third. Junior Midfielder Henry Sarmiento talks about what this victory means for our team...

Today was definitely a turning point in our season. It was a game laden with the elements of a classic rivalry including physical play, quality goals, controversial calls, great individual performances, and even a little lightning. Sports Information Director Ron Smith describes the eventful game fully here:

Akyen’s Last Minute Goal Ties Cougars
Submitted by: Ron Smith - October 19th, 2010

Nana Akyen

“My biggest hope for today was that we would take another step forward,” said Westmont head coach Dave Wolf. “We have had a couple of situations where we have gotten throttled and then bounced back. I think the Point Loma game on the Saturday was the second of those bounce backs. My hope was that we could keep it moving in the right direction. I thought all-in-all we were able to do that.”

The Warriors ability to move forward was called into question when the Cougars scored in the fourteenth minute. Vinicius Dantas drove to the goal from the left side of the field. Instead of shooting, he passed the ball across the face of the goal to Alex Earl who slid in and kicked the ball to the near post. The ball ricocheted off the post and into the goal.

It was only the third time this season that the Warriors’ opponent has been the first to put points on the board. The other two times where in blowout losses to Biola and Fresno Pacific. This time, the Warriors would bounce back immediately, tying the game just one and one-half minute later.

Akyen drove the center of the field with Isaac Thompkins on his right and Ben Gordon to his left. Akyen passed the ball to Thompkins, leading him ahead of all the Cougar defenders. Thompkins served the ball back across the goal where Gordon was charging the net. Gordon took one touch to put the ball away.

“We may look back on that goal as a big moment in our season,” said Wolf.

The Cougar’s took a 2-1 lead in the eightieth minute on a goal by Dantas. Left all alone on the right side, Dantas took a shot from 20 yards out and placed the ball in the upper-V at the far post.

Once again, Westmont seemed to turn up the notch on their level of play in response to the Cougar’s goal. The Warriors thought they had scored in the eighty-fifth minute, but the referee ruled that the ball had not crossed the line. A moment later, Azusa Pacific was called for a handball in the box, but Cougar keeper Joe Geletko guessed correctly on Doug Harrell’s penalty kick and was able to punch the ball away.

Just as fans were beginning to resign themselves to a close loss, Akyen changed their minds.

“After the game,” said Wolf, “I told the team, ‘You added a page to Westmont soccer history. This is a game that people will talk about.’

“We have an incredible history with APU,” continued Wolf. “As I said to (Azusa Pacific head coach) Dave (Blomquist) after the game, there just aren’t any conventional games (between us). Every game has some twist or turn that nobody saw coming.

One of those twists was a thirty-minute suspension of play three minutes into the first overtime period due to a thunderstorm that passed through the area. The game was played in a variety of conditions including rain, sunshine, darkening skies, bright blue skies, wind and calm. If fans didn’t like the weather, all they had to do was wait ten minutes for it to change.

What didn’t change, at least in two overtime periods, was the score.

With three games remaining in the regular season, Westmont is currently in seventh place in the GSAC, having tallied eight points in the conference standings (three points for a win, one for a tie). The Master’s, which Westmont will play next week, is one point ahead of the Warriors with nine points.

On Saturday, the Warriors will host Hope International in a men’s and women’s doubleheader. The Royals are tied for ninth place in the GSAC, but with six points, they trail the Warriors by just two. The men’s squads will face off on Saturday at noon with the women’s teams following at 2:30.

The Warriors experienced another disappointing match today as the team fell 4-1 to the visiting Sunbirds. After conceding two early goals, the team fought back with solid passing and physicality but the transition game of Fresno Pacific was too much. Two counter attack goals in the second half basically put the Warriors away. However, the team continued to play hard as Isaac Thompkins (Sophomore, Forward) beat the keeper for a score late in the game. This was followed by two disallowed goals for the Warriors due to offsides calls and several other quality opportunities. Nonetheless, the loss forces the team to answer some looming questions heading into Saturday's away match vs. Point Loma. Senior Forward Harrison Hill shares his thoughts on the game in the video below. As always, thank you for your continued support of the players and program.

It certainly wasn't the way the Warriors expected the game to go, but the team was nonetheless glad for the overtime win and its 6th victory of the year. In the first half, the team started out of the gate well with good ball movement and several opportunities on goal. In the 10th minute, these efforts culminated in a textbook connection between Doug Harrell (Forward, Junior) and Harrison Hill (Forward, Senior). Doug collected a through ball on the right wing and laced a cross through the box where Harrison finished it calmly with the outside of his foot. However, San Diego Christian refused to let up a second goal and started to turn the momentum around with dangerous chances of their own. With 7 minutes remaining in the first half, a counter attack lead to a shot on goal. The ball was saved by Matt McNab (Goalkeeper, Sophomore) but the rebound was slotted home to even the score at 1-1. This certainly changed the nature of the game and team was frustrated at halftime for not putting away more chances early. In the second half, the Warriors attempted to revitalize their passing game but were unable to connect in the box for the game winner. To their credit, San Diego Christian played with consistent passion and were clearly determined to leave Thorrington Field with a tie or win. Yet 2 minutes into the first overtime, the Warriors ended the stalemate. A scramble in the box caused the ball to fall to Doug Harrell. Seeing the goalie off his line, Doug flicked the ball over the keeper and just under to the crossbar to give the Warriors the win. It was a game the team needed to win especially with a tough string of games of ahead. Most of all, the team was glad to win in front of a supportive Homecoming crowd of current students, parents, alumni, and former players. It is always our goal to play with heart like so many Warriors have shown us throughout history. Hopefully we demonstrated elements of that today.

Mccarthy_8-200x133

Coming in, we knew it wasn't going to be easy. The UCSB Gauchos are currently ranked #6 in Division 1 Men's Soccer and sport a roster of overwhelmingly international talent. The speed and quickness of their game was experienced early as the Gauchos attacked right out of the gate. After several close calls around the box, UCSB slotted away two of their chances. The first came in the 11th minute as a diagonal ball through the top of the box was calmly finished by midfielder Daniel Silva. Soon after, in the 22nd minute, forward Sam Garza sliced through the midfield eventually slipping a ball in the back of the net. At this point, the game seemed decided and most of the 3,100 spectators in attendance were merely hoping that the match wouldn't become a blowout. Yet the Warriors responded with passion and intensity as the game wore on. In the second half, the play was even as both teams stung passes together and had chances on goal. In the 65th minute, senior forward Anthony Niboli slyly passed the ball to the edge of the UCSB box. Freshman midfielder Rick McCarthy ran onto it and rocketed the ball just under the crossbar to make the score 2-1. The play evened out for the next 10 minutes as the Warriors increasingly sensed that the momentum had shifted. However, in the 75th minute, Gaucho forward Michael Nonni showed his speed by beating a few defenders and put the game away with a breakaway goal. Though the team was upset about the start of the game, the overall mood afterward was optimistic. The team battled back against a talented and physical opponent which bodes well for the opening game of the season on Thursday. The team also demonstrated its depth with new players such as Freshmen Rick McCarthy and Sean Siemens logging significant minutes and finding their way onto the scoresheet. And most of all, the team played "together" which, as many alumni know, is the most important weapon of all.

Greetings Westmont Alumni and Parents!

We are truly excited for the start of the 2010 season and want to thank you for the support we have already received. As of yesterday, we completed preseason training camp and feel great about the direction of the squad. The incoming players bring a lot of talent to our roster and have already proven themselves to be hard-workers and team players. The team has pledged to not only succeed on the field but also make its mark on the Westmont community as a group of invididuals dedicated to upholding the heritage of the program and honoring God in the process. As we seek to do this, we want to keep you as informed as possible about the events and spirit surrounding the team. Thus, we will be updating this blog frequently with game recaps, interviews, and pictures that hopefully keep our extended community connected. Once again, thank you so much for your continued support and we are proud to be a part of the Warrior family.

In Him,
Scott Williams & Daniel Sargent

Hello Warriors.

We survived the weekend with one injury.  It was a bad tackle from behind.  Just the way you remember UCSB playing soccer. J

I wanted to thank everyone that made the trip back to Westmont/ Santa Barbara.

We had a great time.  The first game started on Saturday morning with the Current Westmont team vs. the young Alums.  It was a good game that was played in perfect conditions on Lovik.  The Young Alums had 15 players and got off to a good start.  The Alums were up 3-1 in half time but the current team came back strong in the second half and beat the alums 4-3.

The fun continued at Harder stadium in the afternoon were the over 30 alums played against an over 30 UCSB.  We had 15 players from all ages.  We were down 2-1 in halftime but in the last 5 minutes of the game Mike Walker step up to a free kick outside the box and made some magic.
The game ended 2-2.

We will do it again next year on the 3rd weekend of April. Put it in your calendar and hopefully we will see you next year.

I need your help with one more thing.

We are updating our database.  Can you send me an email with your last name, first name, street address, city, state, zip, phone, email, years played and spouse name.

THANKS!
Johan

The festivities will start on Saturday morning; alumni under 30 will be playing on Lovik Field at 9:00 am, AGAINST the current Westmont

team.
We will have coffee and bagels so come and support the young alums. It will also offer up those who have not seen the new stadium to take a look at what I believe is the best small college soccer stadium on the West Coast. The fun continues Saturday afternoon as the over 30 alums take on UCSB at Harder Stadium. Those fit enough are more than welcome to play in the Saturday morning and afternoon games.

Schedule

9:00 am
Westmont Alumni (Under 30) vs. Westmont Current Team
On Lovik

2:00-3:30 pm
UCSB Alumni (over 30) vs. Westmont Alumni (over 30)
At UCSB

After the 2nd match Saturday evening, alumni still walking and the loved ones who have to endure their moans of pain, we will hold our post-match 'regeneration' session @ Hollister Brewing Co., which was terrific last year. Please forward this email to alums not on this list.

Hope to see you all in SB.

Be well - Hoppy & Johan
