Post-Game Interview with Matt McNab (Freshman GK from Rancho Palos Verdes, CA)

Profile: Matt McNab

Clearly, the team didn't get the win today. How do you feel about the game and how our team played?

"On the day, I felt that we played really hard. From my view in the back, we created a lot of scoring chances and were pretty solid defensively. However, when it comes down to it, we failed to score and lost the match."

You mentioned we had some opportunities to to score today. How can we improve in that area before our next game this Saturday?

"For me, it's about mentality and composure. We especially need to work on technique in the box. Maybe we could work on our finishing with drills that involve defensive pressure and awkward balls. That could help us better prepare for game-like situations going into Saturday."

You have stepped into the starting role early this season. How have you felt thus far in that regard?

"To be sure, I felt the nerves at the start. However, since then, I feel that I have adjusted quickly, growing more comfortable with each game. Obviously, I still have a lot to learn in the next four years. I want to work toward eliminating mistakes, while getting more and more comfortable with my defense. It's also been an easier transition with a player like Dillon Barna (Sr., Captain) in front of me. A smart, 6' 4" sweeper is always great to have!"

Though we have played solid defense in stretches, we are yet to get a shutout. How can we get one this Saturday?

"True, we have, for the most part, played well on defense. On my end, I want to eliminate some of the mistakes I have made. To tell the truth, on both goals this tournament, there are things I could have done better. I strongly believe that those games could have been shutouts for our side. Yet, I try not to let mistakes get to me. Going into Saturday, I will just try to learn from them and move on."

Last Question. The alumni have graciously bought our cleats each year. Which ones did you pick up?

"I actually picked up the white Predators. They are honestly the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. My wide feet fit extra well in these boots. I am very grateful for that service from the alumni and want to thank them sincerely."

Finishing/Fitness/Found Out

On the bus cruising home from Azusa with the boys after packing up some wet unis and a 0-1 result Vs # 15 Simon Fraser. Bottom line is they took their chance and we did not. No need to over analyze. Fitness and finishing don't always show up in the same sentence, but today they do. Not sharp enough physically to take our chances.

Off to catch some food and back to SB. I read that Arsenal was very good VS United but dropped a tough result. Somehow get a hold of Walks and see if he is ok.

Season Opener

Well, I'm taking this new technology for a test ride!!!! The boys opened up the season yesterday with a 5-1 victory over Westminster at the APU Cougar Classic. The positives were that we scored some goals (five different names on the score sheet) and survived the heat (104 at kick off). On the other side, we're still trying to figure some things out and didn't play particularly well for long stretches of time. One day at a time.

We head back to APU for game 2 on Saturday Vs long time "Mont" rival Simon Fraser. They're good. Real good. Watched em last night and they're class. It will be smoking again for the 12:30 pm kick, and the boys will need to dig deep.

Speaking of digging deep, led by Dane Howard, Justin Wall, Allen Hopkins and Matt Wiedmann, there are some alumni digging deep right now. There is a great vibe running through the program and it's been amazing to see some new thoughts and connections get kicked up. Very fresh and exciting.

Thanks to all for getting "stuck in" and can't wait to see you again.

Great start...

Warriors,

A great start to the season. You know the expectations for success are high when you win a game 5-1 and you think you can play better. That's a real championship mentality. Also, I think it is no coincidence that last season was disrupted by fire and the 2009 season begins with fire once again a central story-line.

Thanks for the profiles and updates this is one of the most unique ventures in the program and the college's history and I am thankful for everyone's contributions.

Enjoy your footy...Be well - Allen

Post-Game Interview with Scott Williams (Junior Midfielder/Defender from Albuquerque, NM)

Scott-williams-0817

Profile: Scott Williams:

The team picked up a win today in the season opener. How do you think the team performed today?

"To be honest, though we picked up the W, we didn't play all too well. Especially in the the first half, we played down to the level of competition. However, we did play well enough to win even though we weren't great on the day. We'll have to play better on Saturday to get a result."

Though you played left back and midfield today, you were very active on the offensive side of the ball. Tell us a little about that aspect of the game.

"I could tell right from the start that their back four was a bit insecure with their passing. Anytime I saw a loose pass, I tried to hunt the ball down as much as possible to create a counter-attack for our side. Our forwards were making good runs, so I was able to find them for some quality scoring opportunities."

With five goals today, our team did pretty well on the attacking end. What, in your opinion, facilitated that?

"We challenged well in the air both in the midfield and in the box. We also got a lot of good holds from our strikers which created opportunities for us to go forward and put pressure on their defense."

What could we improve on going into a tough match against Simon Frasier (B.C)?

"In my opinion, we played too much on one side of the field. We forced passes into areas instead of looking to switch the ball properly. We need to get our outside backs into the game more and find our central midfielders who are adept at the changing the point of attack. We want to find Hugo Pizano (Sr.) or Anthony Strunz (Jr.) especially in that role."

There have been several newcomers to the team that have already become key contributors. Who has stood out to you thus far?

"For me, Kam Bechler, a freshman central defender, has been solid already in the back. In his first collegiate start today, he looked sharp and played with good pace. Isaac Thompkins, a freshman outside midfielder, can use his speed to attack the defensive backs. He was instrumental in winning a PK for us late in the game today. And, clearly, our two transfers Doug Harrell (Soph.) and Daniel Torres (Jr.) have proven to be dynamic forces up top."

Last question. Dillon Barna scored his first collegiate goal today on a PK. What do you think about that?

"Well, first I thought he was going to blast it too hard and over the net :-). Yet, when the foul was called, Dillon was the first to want to take it. Sometimes it's good to give the shot to whoever feels most confident rather than your set guy. Dillon stepped up there and drove it home. It was awesome to see such a defensive leader make it on the stats sheet."

I sat down with Ben Gordon ( Sophomore Midfielder from Sedona, AZ)

Profile: Ben Gordon

What are your general impressions of the team thus far?

As coach has said, we have a lot of depth being able to play different formations in one game can help us offset the other team and make them react to us. Furthermore, being so deep and having fresh legs will be beneficial as we play in a tough GSAC conference and hopefully allow us to go even farther than last year.

You scored your first collegiate goal last Saturday against UCSB. Could you walk us through it?

I remember there was a gap in the defense and they froze up as Daniel Guzman (Soph.) got a ball slipped down the right flank. I saw him and realized it was just me and the goalie. He hit a great, firm pass to me. I didn’t have to hit it too hard just made sure to have solid contact and guide to it to the back post. As soon as I made contact, I remember being clipped from behind by a UCSB defender and falling to the ground. It seemed like slow motion as I watched the ball beat the keeper and cross the line. Then I realized, I think I just scored!! Guzman and I just stared at each other for a second in pure shock and then I remember grabbing my Westmont shirt and proudly showing the symbol to the crowd.

What, as a team, can we take away from the UCSB game both positively and negatively?

On the positive side, we came in firing on all pistons, right on them at the start for a good 75 minutes. We are a quick team who can play with pace. Defensively we pressured very well. I think we have a top of the line defense. If we connect that defense to our midfield and find our strikers making good runs, we’ll be a tough team to beat. On the negative side, we need to be fresh fitness wise, rest when we have the chance. We need take care of ourselves with lots of water and rest. When we get the opportunities, we need to focus on keeping ourselves healthy and ready for the next game.

What are your goals as an individual this season?

This year I really want to be more solid on technique. I want to be a player that my teammates trust when they give me the ball. They know that I’m going to take care of it or distribute it well. And to be honest, I just want to get some assists and put the ball in the back of the goal!!

What are some of the most important lessons you learned from the alumni a few weeks ago?

It seemed to me that they were still in training camp, enjoying one another's company and cherishing the Westmont tradition. They are still a family and I love that. They buy our boots each year, which is very helpful. I just love that family aspect. Also, the thoughts of defender Kevin Smith were great. The idea that if you work harder in practice and keep pressure high on Lovik, games will seem so much easier. I’m truly grateful for those valuable lessons I learned from the alumni and will keep them with me this year.

Captains' Blog

Hello Alumni and Parents,

On behalf of the team, the captains would like to thank all of the alumni, parents, and friends who have supported the team over the years. It means so much to have supporters on the sidelines, parents holding team dinners, and the Westmont soccer community cheering us on from all over the country. Recently, the alumni weekend reminded us of the amazing community that surrounds the program. It was a truly special time for us current players as we were able to gain wisdom from former stars and learn what it means to be a part of the Westmont tradition and continue on the path to being men of God.
To further the connection between alumni, parents, and players, Justin Wall and Dane Howard have graciously created this website. One of our goals as captains is to consistently give the 'inside scoop' as to what's happening within the team during the season through this medium. This could consist of post-game interviews, player profiles, or prayer requests that hopefully strengthen the bond between the team and its wonderful community. Thank you again for your support and we look forward to hearing from you soon.

Blessings,
Dan Sargent, Justin Miller, Dillon Barna

Santa Barbara Derby (a.k.a. The Battle for State Street) - Westmont Warriors v. UCSB Gauchos - 8/22/09

Santa Barbara Derby (a.k.a. The Battle for State Street)
Westmont Warriors v. UCSB Gauchos - 8/22/09

It was a chamber of commerce evening at UCSB's Harder Stadium where a crowd of nearly 2400 fans was on hand for the annual crosstown tilt. It was just a beautiful sunset and the type of weather you could run all night.

It was great to see Montecito's finest well supported by a strong Westmont contingent. Old alums, such as  Mike Walker were in the mix. While, Michael Thompson, Justin Sparks, Ryan Warner, and Sergio Hernandez were representing the younger alums well.

USCB has come along way from the Cliff Draeger era and give Coach Tim Vom Steeg lots of credit for not only taking the program to new heights but also for keeping it up there in the rarified air of a national championship caliber program. UCSB will host the 2010 College Cup.

The first half was a fairly even affair with the host holding a slight edge. Vom Steeg told me before the game he thinks he has the best midfield in the nation and the Warriors did themselves proud neutralizing the talented group. Westmont had a legit claim for a handball in the box against the Gauchos in the 25th minute but it went uncalled and the first half finished scoreless.

Wolfy said pre-game that surviving the early minutes was going to be key and they did that and more. The Warriors picked up right where they left off to start the final half and battled hard for the first 15 minutes of the second half and took the lead in the 60th minute. Daniel Guzman, just into the game 5 minutes earlier, broke free down the right and slotted for fellow substitute Ben Gordon to bury, 1-0.

UCSB pressed and their game began to flirt on the edge of desperation as Westmont held the lead till the 75th minute when the Warriors bend but don't break defense finally broke. Freshman GK matthew McNab made a nice save off his line only to see the ball take a fortunate carom at the top of the box for an open UCSB player to fire into the empty net, 1-1.

UCSB began to play on a tilted field to their advantage and took the lead for good in the 80th minute. The GWG was off a very good cross and picturesq header. The final tally in the 86th minute was a mazy, dribbling, slalom run against a tired - and diving in - defense with a neat finish to cap the scoring. When the dust cleared in a frantic final quarter hour, all that was left was a deserved 3-1 UCSB win.

Great effort for the boys and more than something to build on as the season opener is just a few days away (Westminster @ APU Cougar Classic - 8/27).

My takeaways from the match:

*The 2009 Warriors can truly  play with anyone in the nation and have clearly maintained a high level of play we saw late last Fall.
*Secondly, this team has a resiliency about them that you can feel. To play the way they did after their performance against SBCC is clear indication of  a team capable of learning and improving quickly.
*Wolfy played 8 off the bench and there's very little difference between starters and the other players. As Wolfy told before the match, there's a difference between 'squad depth' and 'squad rotation'.

Some individual notes...
*Hugo Pizano ran the midfield and will clearly have matches this season where he's the best player on the park.
*Dillon Barna is on the short list of top defenders in the region at any level
*Freshman Kameron Bechler showed a maturity beyond his years in the back and will be a strong contributor this season.
