Watch the Warriors Live!

Great News! The Westmont Athletic department is now offering live video broadcasts of all home Men's Soccer matches! The games can be viewed at http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/westmont.portal#. The video will include in-game commentary by student announcers and hopefully help the Warrior community feel closer to the action. Thank you to Sports Information Director Ron Smith and the many others who worked hard to make this possible. The next match is Friday September 3rd against La Verne @ 4 pm on Thorington Field. Enjoy!!!

Warriors lose to Gauchos 3-1

Coming in, we knew it wasn't going to be easy. The UCSB Gauchos are currently ranked #6 in Division 1 Men's Soccer and sport a roster of overwhelmingly international talent. The speed and quickness of their game was experienced early as the Gauchos attacked right out of the gate. After several close calls around the box, UCSB slotted away two of their chances. The first came in the 11th minute as a diagonal ball through the top of the box was calmly finished by midfielder Daniel Silva. Soon after, in the 22nd minute, forward Sam Garza sliced through the midfield eventually slipping a ball in the back of the net. At this point, the game seemed decided and most of the 3,100 spectators in attendance were merely hoping that the match wouldn't become a blowout. Yet the Warriors responded with passion and intensity as the game wore on. In the second half, the play was even as both teams stung passes together and had chances on goal. In the 65th minute, senior forward Anthony Niboli slyly passed the ball to the edge of the UCSB box. Freshman midfielder Rick McCarthy ran onto it and rocketed the ball just under the crossbar to make the score 2-1. The play evened out for the next 10 minutes as the Warriors increasingly sensed that the momentum had shifted. However, in the 75th minute, Gaucho forward Michael Nonni showed his speed by beating a few defenders and put the game away with a breakaway goal. Though the team was upset about the start of the game, the overall mood afterward was optimistic. The team battled back against a talented and physical opponent which bodes well for the opening game of the season on Thursday. The team also demonstrated its depth with new players such as Freshmen Rick McCarthy and Sean Siemens logging significant minutes and finding their way onto the scoresheet. And most of all, the team played "together" which, as many alumni know, is the most important weapon of all.

2010 Captains' Note

Greetings Westmont Alumni and Parents!

We are truly excited for the start of the 2010 season and want to thank you for the support we have already received. As of yesterday, we completed preseason training camp and feel great about the direction of the squad. The incoming players bring a lot of talent to our roster and have already proven themselves to be hard-workers and team players. The team has pledged to not only succeed on the field but also make its mark on the Westmont community as a group of invididuals dedicated to upholding the heritage of the program and honoring God in the process. As we seek to do this, we want to keep you as informed as possible about the events and spirit surrounding the team. Thus, we will be updating this blog frequently with game recaps, interviews, and pictures that hopefully keep our extended community connected. Once again, thank you so much for your continued support and we are proud to be a part of the Warrior family.

In Him,
Scott Williams & Daniel Sargent

2010 Alumni Game

Westmont vs. UCSB - April 24th, 2010 - (2-2 tie)
GOALS: Hopkins and Walker

Stealing the points...

Hello Warriors.

We survived the weekend with one injury.  It was a bad tackle from behind.  Just the way you remember UCSB playing soccer. J

I wanted to thank everyone that made the trip back to Westmont/ Santa Barbara.

We had a great time.  The first game started on Saturday morning with the Current Westmont team vs. the young Alums.  It was a good game that was played in perfect conditions on Lovik.  The Young Alums had 15 players and got off to a good start.  The Alums were up 3-1 in half time but the current team came back strong in the second half and beat the alums 4-3.

The fun continued at Harder stadium in the afternoon were the over 30 alums played against an over 30 UCSB.  We had 15 players from all ages.  We were down 2-1 in halftime but in the last 5 minutes of the game Mike Walker step up to a free kick outside the box and made some magic.
The game ended 2-2.

We will do it again next year on the 3rd weekend of April. Put it in your calendar and hopefully we will see you next year.

I need your help with one more thing.

We are updating our database.  Can you send me an email with your last name, first name, street address, city, state, zip, phone, email, years played and spouse name.

THANKS!
Johan

We will have coffee and bagels so come and support the young alums. It will also offer up those who have not seen the new stadium to take a look at what I believe is the best small college soccer stadium on the West Coast. The fun continues Saturday afternoon as the over 30 alums take on UCSB at Harder Stadium. Those fit enough are more than welcome to play in the Saturday morning and afternoon games.

Spring Season Starts Early

The Westmont Men's Soccer Team is on track to start training a little earlier this year than in years past. Starting Thursday January 21, the team will start training at P3 in preparation for the coming season. P3 (or Peak Performance Project) is a company owned by new Westmont Athletic Director Dave Odell and specializes in helping athletes to become quicker, stronger and faster. Many of the other athletic teams at Westmont have been participating in this program, and large improvement has been seen as a result. Daniel Guzman (Soph.) is very excited about this new program: "I think it is great to see our team taking a step in the right direction in the area of fitness. Our team can really benefit from this and I can't wait to see the improvement each player makes as a result." The Men's team will be training in this new program for about 3 weeks and will start training on the field on February 8th.

On another note, the new stadium field is near completion and everyone is very anxious to get on it, and as you all can imagine, Wolfy is the most excited. Zach George (Soph.) says, "It's great we finally have our own field, and it isn't made of a bunch of different types of grass which is nice. I just know that if anyone touches that field before its ready, Wolfy is going to kill them." The word is definitely out that it is going to be a great facility. Denmark and Mexico will playing a friendly in Santa Barbara in the coming weeks and asked if they could use our new field. Unfortunately, the field will not be ready in time for the game, but it is exciting that two such high profile teams would like to use our facility. It will certainly provide a great venue for home games next season and the team plans on making it a winning start to a new pitch.

More to come soon.....

Warriors beat Concordia 1-0 in OT in GSAC Playoffs (Round 1)

Midway through the first half, a Concordia striker sent a dangerous ball through the six-yard box. Matt McNab (Fresh, GK) got a hand on it but the ball rolled across the goal mouth to a waiting Eagle midfielder. At that moment, Justin Miller (Sr, Defender) desperately threw his body in front of the shot and prevented a sure-to-be goal. That play was the essence of today's 1-0 playoff victory: some close-calls but more importantly, a lot of heart. After relatively uneventful first half, the game heated up quickly as both teams exchanged looks on goal. However, just one minute into overtime, Hugo Pizano sent a through ball into Daniel Torres who collected it and gave a lead pass to a streaking Isaac Thompkins (Fresh., Forward). Thompkins calmly took a touch and struck a shot near post to send the Warriors into the next round of playoffs. The team, coming off this emotional victory, will face a tough opponent in Master's College on Saturday afternoon at their field. Thank you to the alumni that attended the game and we look to see some of you next game!
